It’s early days yet, but Australians Grace Kim and Karl Vilips are on the podium after one day’s play at the 2018 Youth Olympics in Argentina.

The Hurlingham Club in Buenos Aires proved a tough test for the field in the opening round of stroke play but the Australian duo charged home to be among the leaders with 36 holes remaining.

Vilips was 2-over late in his round but mustered three birdies late in the day to finish at 1-under and on top of the 32-strong leaderboard.

Vilips is one of four players in the red numbers, that group two strokes clear of a pack of four players to sign for a 1-over 71.

In the girls, Grace Kim signed for a 1-over start in the opening round, leaving her second on the standings as one of five players to return a 71.

Italy’s Alessia Nobilio got her campaign off to a flying start by carding the round of the day, a 2-under 68, to be the only player in the field under par.

Individual medals will be awarded after the 54-hole event, before a 72-hole team component kicks off following a rest day on Saturday.
