2 weeks to #AusOpenGolf: Bruce Devlin

Bruce Devlin still rates his 1960 Australian Open win as the high point of his career.

Devlin, now 80 and living in Texas, won tournaments all around the world as a professional but says his win at Lake Karrinyup as a 22-year-old amateur set him up.

"It sits at the top,'' Devlin told Golf Australia's Inside The Ropes podcast. "I've had a great career around the world, but if I look at how that career got started, it got started at the Open, It was nice to win the NSW Amateur, it was nice to win the Australian Amateur but to win the Australian Open ...

"I mean, to be honest with you, I had no intention of turning pro. I came home from work one day and my wife was sitting with Norman Von Nida in the rented flat we had in Goulburn, and I said: ''What the hell are you doing here?'' He said: "I came here to talk you into turning pro, and your wife thinks you should'. They ganged up on me!''

Devlin, who later became an acclaimed broadcaster and course architect, spoke freely about his admiration for Jack Nicklaus, and his long friendship with Ben Hogan.
